Wool and water have shaped Harrisville, New Hampshire since the early 1800s. This National Historic Landmark is still a working village, and home to Harrisville Designs. Join our group as we travel from the Boston area into a place where weaving, spinning and history continue today.
Nestled along the hillsides that follow Nubanusit Brook, Harrisville began as a frontier trading hub where enterprising farmers milled logs, a blacksmith made repairs and wool and linen were carded and spun. By the 1850’s, Harrisville evolved into a bustling factory village. Water powered turbines ran the looms that created woolen fabric. When the last woolen mill closed in 1970, residents stepped in to define the future for the village.
During the last 40 years, Historic Harrisville, Inc. has worked to preserve its beauty, history and textile traditions while encouraging a livable, affordable town with a diversified business base. Harrisville Designs has been a key player in that strategy. They provide custom spinning, weaving supplies and classes, plus a variety of yarns and patterns for hand knitting. We will tour their custom spinning mill along Nubanusit Brook. After the weaving demonstration, try your hand at the loom and visit the sunny retail store. There will be time to browse, and sit and knit, or explore the town with your sketch pad or camera.
